Ha Ha… that caught your attention on this Friday afternoon!
First, Thanks everyone! I really am SERIOUSLY happy that Mountain Mantras: Wellness and Life Lessons from the Slopes is doing so well in the Amazon rankings. Yesterday the e-book did hit #1 in its category (and it’s still there today), and about a month ago the paperback was a #1 Best Seller in its category.
Rumors about this success spread to my kids, and they started asking for new gadgets and expensive items. I thought to myself, “They think that I’m rolling in the dough from this book? HA!”.
If you think most people write books to make money, you should read this article by an Amazon Best Selling (overall, not just category) author. The reference to Dave Eggers was extremely interesting too, since one of my best friends went to Middlebury with Dave. Great guy and great writer, but writing A Heartbreaking Work of Staggering Genius did not put him behind the wheel of a Jaguar.
At my book talk at the Boise Public Library last night, I had a blast with a really fantastic group that I think really got a lot from the talk and gathering. I personally loved the evening and got to connect with some fantastic women. But did book sales make me rich? Nope, they didn’t even cover my expenses for the trip.
And all those 99 cents ebooks I’ve sold this week? First, I’ll get a fraction of those 99 pennies given the printer/distributor/wholesaler model. On top of those economics, authors these days pay out of pocket for advertising and promotion. Yep, a several hundred dollar fee to my distributor to run the promotion, then Net Galley another $75 to promote it for a week. So am I making any money yet? Nope!
But I’m have a GREAT time with all of you thinking that I’m skipping to the bank.
And I am THRILLED that so many readers are benefitting from the book. Reading the reader reviews is what keeps me going, so if you have read the book but have not posted a review, please do so today! 🙂
