The topic of our lesson was sugar, a lesson Nurture has been teaching successfully for years. Do we tell kids not to eat sugar? No! We simply:
*educate kids (how to know how much sugar is in an item, how to estimate added sugars vs. naturally occurring),
*inspire kids (does refined sugar provide long lasting energy to build strong bodies? No…) and
*give kids choices (do you really want to consume that Mountain Dew with the pyramid of sugar cubes?). Maybe not.
We then tried Fiesta Casserole made with lentils. The kids really wanted to try lentils! We thought it was perfect given that the United Nations has recently declared 2016 the year of the pulse/legume/bean. Enjoy!
Thank you to Chrissie Huss and Carrie Douglas for their help in the classroom!
