How accurate was your count? And…did you see the gorilla?
How about your team members at work? If you can believe it, about half of the people that have seen this video miss the gorilla. This phenomenon, coined “the invisible gorilla”, was studied in depth by psychologist Daniel Simons. He theorizes that what we see doesn’t necessarily translate to what our mind processes.
Is this a good or bad thing? I propose that it is both. For those that don’t see the gorilla, let’s give them a pat on the back for being focused. At the same time, should we give them a whack for being inattentive?
As for those that see the gorilla- Are you seeing the big picture or are you just easily distracted. What do you think? Should your team consist of both types of people? I think so!
