Earlier this year, I was asked to give a keynote at a lunch thanking volunteers and staff for local nonprofit, The Advocates. The theme of the lunch was “Why Giving Makes You Feel Good”, and I spoke about all of the scientific studies showing that volunteerism and philanthropy can be great for your health (and even allow you to live longer).
There was a mix of age groups at the lunch, and I talked about how former New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg, a big giver to many causes, said that “when it comes to philanthropy, 30 is the new 70.” This quote was a reaction to Mark Zuckerberg and Priscilla Chan’s decision to give away 99% of their Facebook shares to charity (when they announced the birth of their adorable baby girl). Very cool.
This blog post by Michael Hyatt (5 research-backed benefits of making generosity a habit) has excellent information about why we should make generosity a habit.
Our family gives to many causes, including Nurture, which provides nutrition and wellness education to children and families. I like giving to smaller organizations where I know a donation makes a huge difference.
