I can’t believe it’s that time of year again, but the amazing IBPA Publishing University is April 7-9 in the beautiful city of Portland, Oregon (which I’m excited to visit).
The title of my talk is: Show Me the Money! Discovering How Much It Costs to Self-Publish Your Book.
Yes, I based it off the hilarious scene from the movie Jerry Maguire. It shows a desperate business person (Jerry Maguire played by Tom Cruise) doing whatever he can to keep a client. I have seen a lot of desperation in the publishing industry, so I thought I might invoke a feeling by alluding to this scene in the title of my talk.
However, I do take my speaking gigs seriously. I can’t even begin to describe the background work that has led up to this event. I’ll give you a little recap:
-In January 2017, I created a set of extensive surveys that asked about goals, achievement to goal, and costs for traditionally published authors, self published authors and hybrid published authors
-In January and February, I then recruited several dozen BRAVE and amazing authors to participate in this crazy, extensive survey
-In February and March, I tabulated all of the results into an incredible Survey Report (nearly 40 pages long!)
-Also in February and March, I wrote a book about this experience (Look Before You Leap)
-In March, I created a author financial tool that allows authors to create scenarios on how much money they will make/lose on a book project. You can contact me if you want to see the beta version.
-Note (this financial tool is now being modified from beta to version 2.0 as an online software tool. Cross your fingers that my developers are doing a good job).
-I’m now developing and finalizing my slides. PHEW.
I hope to see you there. I’ve included a description of my talk below.
Here is a video where I talk about how much I love IBPA.
Description for my talk (for this year, 2017):
You know that publishing is an incredible avenue through which to reach and help people and change their lives. You have a message to communicate and are considering your publishing options, including self-publishing. But how much does it truly cost to self-publish a professional book from production to marketing to distribution? This interactive, scenario based discussion will give you the tools to plan your publication model based on solid financial tools. Make sure you understand your vast array of possibilities along the self-publishing journey so that you can make investment decisions wisely.
Last year at IBPA, I participated in a panel discussion about the variety in the publishing industry:
