News of Give It a Go, Eat a Rainbow reached millions last week when a press release went out on PR Newswire to spread the feel-good story about a teen helping to create a book that will inspire other kids to eat healthy fruits and veggies.
SUN VALLEY, Idaho, April 21, 2016 /PRNewswire/ — How do you create messages that will resonate with kids? Have the messages come from another kid! That reasoning led a unique mother-son team to create a fun and engaging picture book for young children called Give It a Go, Eat a Rainbow.
“I know from being a kid myself what interests kids. Our book targets toddlers through elementary school kids, and that was me just a few years ago,” explains middle schooler Alex Guylay.
Alex helped his mom create a book that will encourage kids to eat colorful fruits and veggies through educational yet playful messages.
The book traces the transformational journey of Blake, who feels sleepy at first while eating sugary and processed foods. After meeting a magical leprechaun and exploring a path to a pot of gold, Blake is energized through eating colorful fruits and veggies.
Alex, an award-winning artist, enlisted his art teacher, Cara Frost, to guide him on the project. They decided to use a medium called “augmented reality” which combines photography with hand drawn illustrations. Using real-life photography for the fruits and veggies was important to Kathryn, who will use the book to visually introduce kids to new foods through her nutrition education programs.
Having the fresh perspective of Alex on the team created beneficial twists in the process of getting the book published. When stumped by the high cost of printing a four-color book, Alex suggested doing a Kickstarter campaign to raise funds. You can access the campaign through June 1 athttps://www.kickstarter.com/projects/923631210/give-it-a-go-eat-a-rainbow-kids-picture-book
He also created #Blakeeatsarainbow to connect the community of healthy rainbow-eaters on Instagram and other social media platforms. Alex knows kids inspire other kids!
The book will be presented to the publishing community at Book Expo America in Chicago on May 12.
