Several people in the audience said, “well, I talk on these responsibilities out of guilt”. I told them I’d give them a permission slip to say “no” to future opportunities. My permission slip is based on the writings of Elizabeth Gilbert who, in her book Big Magic, provides a permission slip to those that want to pursue creativity in their lives.
- “You do not need anybody’s permission to live a creative life.”
- “If you’re alive, you’re a creative person.”
- “You do not need anybody’s permission to increase your score on the “Feel Good” scale. If it doesn’t make you feel good, please don’t do it.
- “If you’re alive, you’re a being of energy. You have only so much energy. Use your volunteer time to pursue activities that GIVE you energy, not take it away. In other words, use your strengths.

My interview with Beth Cabrera (on using your strengths in pursuing well-being) might also be helpful. Enjoy!
